Beauty of Our Breathe in Meditation
One of my favorite things about silent meditation is that it allows us to develop a relationship with our breath. At the most fundamental level, it is how we stay alive in the physical dimension. Embracing this through the art of meditation is a beautiful practice.
I was once told that two things are certain in life, no matter who we are—rich or poor, unattractive or handsome—everyone is born, and everyone dies. Well, I’d like to add one more to that list: we all breathe. No matter our circumstances, we all have access to our breath, which connects us to our authentic selves and natural rhythm. No two people breathe the same way, making it the simplest and purest form of our individuality.
The observation of the breath is where the scientific health benefits of meditation truly come into play. When we slow down and focus on intentional breathing, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's "rest and digest" response. This shift helps counterbalance the effects of chronic stress, lowering cortisol levels and promoting a state of relaxation. A consistent meditation practice helps manage anxiety, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain and replaces it with internal balance and peace.
Mindful breathing also has physiological benefits. It lowers blood pressure by reducing strain on the heart and improving circulatory efficiency, ensuring that oxygen-rich blood flows more smoothly throughout the body. The enhanced exchange of oxygen to our lungs allows for for better cellular function and energy production. That is why often after a meditation session, you don’t feel tired but centered and rejuvenated.
In terms of mental health, mindful breathing helps manage anxiety, frustration, and overwhelm. Focusing on the breath keeps you present and centered during meditation. Quieting racing thoughts, scattered thinking, and mental loops will strengthen as your meditation practice matures and the benefits of a clutter free mind will gradually integrate into your everyday life—even when you aren’t meditating. This is how the benefits of a meditation extends beyond the practice itself.
There is much beauty in connecting with our breath during meditation. Our breath is the bridge between our soul and body. Honoring it through mindful observation is a simple practice with many rewards.
